Personal Finance is Easier Than They Want You to Think

Keeping tabs on your finances can be a lot of work. You ask yourself, "Where is all my money going?" Your old-fashioned paper check register can’t provide the sorting and balancing features you so desperately need, but on the other hand, monster applications like Quicken make you sift through tons of features and distract you with their financial services ads. You could really use a middle ground – a personal finance manager that excels at the basics but keeps things simple.

shadowClipboard 3.0.2

Retail price: $15.00

shadowClipboard is the clipboard manager for Mac OS X that manages multiple clipboards in a convenient, unobtrusive way. shadowClipboard gives you access to files, pages of texts, images, pdf documents and all other data you have copied a few minutes or a week ago.

The power of shadowClipboard lies in its simplicity and straightforwardness. Rather than placing itself into the Dock – which is rather crowded on most Macs anyway – it resides in the status menu area of your Mac OS X system, next to the AirPort, Monitor and Sound settings and your Menu Bar clock. Or if your status menu is crowded as well you can opt to access shadowClipboard using fully customizable hotkey combinations and disable the status item as well.

  1. Jason Says:

    Well, I certainly can’t complain for $6!
I’ve never been much for remember-what-was-in-the-clipboard apps, but I’ll give it a shot.
CheckBook on the other hand, I might end up using regularly … I’ve been thinking about finding something simple to take care of the ‘ole account.

  2. Mark Says:

Hmm. I doubt that I will use either of these. Well, that’s what you get for gambling $6.

  3. erichd Says:

    Checkbook makes this worthwhile….

The other, I’ll have to see. I’m pretty set with iClip, and hopefully 4 will be out some time… but between iClip, KIT, and now Nori I’m just about stuffed with ways to “keep” things I may need now or later.

Now, all I need to complete this whole sheebang is a better GTD app than Thinking Rock. midnight my time hint hint.

  4. Dan Says:

I see how you got ShoeZOT from these two. Shadow Clipboard starts with Sh, and, um… there’s an o and an e in Checkbook, right? Cool! :)

  5. Mica Says:

blah. should have saved my six bucks… anyone want to buy the licence for six bucks?

  6. kodac Says:

Yea! One of my almost 50 suggestions has finally shown up. Checkbook was the 1st thing I submitted in the Suggest-a-Zot.

It’s great. I don’t like balancing my checkbook but this makes it easy. Oh, I don’t use it myself but for those od you who use quicken it’ll import your files.

    Taken from the site -

    “QIF Import

Moving to CheckBook from another financial application couldn’t be easier. If your current app can export to QIF you’ll be up and running with CheckBook in no time. Works great for bringing in online statements, too! “

  7. sangsara Says:

my initial reaction was disappointment, but i just tried ShadowClipboard and i think it’s gonna be really useful at work. my girlfriend will probably get Checkbook because she likes that kind of thing. not too shabby in the end.

  8. cheerful Says:

shadowClipboard would definitely be useful for me. been using the other copy-n-paste or something in demo mode using rooSwitch. as for Checkbook, it has a pretty impressive history dating all the way back to 2002.

  9. Eddie Says:

erichd, what don’t you like about Thinking Rock?
Just curious. It has gotten better with each release, and I find myself using it more often that other GTD alternatives.
I thought Formation 2 was going to be THE application for me in terms of GTD, but sadly Radical Breeze never delivered on their promises :(

  10. gryphonent Says:

Yep, that was it. NO MORE MYSTERY ZOT FOR ME!. Not only do I have Cute Clip and got iClip 3 through another Zot (with the yet unfulfilled promise of getting a free upgrade to version 4), but also use Liquid Ledger for my finances. This ShoeZot might contain great software, but counting all the money spent on — for me — useless software that doesn’t replace or add to my existing workflow, well, I could have spent the dough elsewhere. On iRatchet for example. I will start saving today to spent on better deals, where I actually know what I get in the end, and where I don’t end up with numerous notepads and the like. Just my two cents. Gotta check what’s on Macupdate.com.

  11. Ericq Says:

I’m really happy with the Shoezot! I already have iclip, but this looks like a worthy competitor. Checkbook looks nice.

Eddie… I can’t speak for Ericd, but my beef with Thinking Rock are all the skimpy little text fields. How am I suppose to brainstorm in one of those things. The text fields can’t even hold a link/alias to an outside file so I can do my brainstorming in Curio or OmniOutliner. Nevertheless, it will continue to have a place in my Application folder… and my heart… ah shucks. ;)

  12. Mario Says:

BTW – Checkbook is now on sale for &14.95 not like the price above says $17.95.

  13. stainboy Says:

woo hoo! i resisted temptation! glad i did…wouldn’t have any use for these.

  14. Eddie Says:

Thanks for the reply. It would be great to have one application capable of doing everything. Like you, I tend to use Curio and OmniOutliner (and Graffle). By the way, it’s been a while since I used KGTD, but that’s a good alternative with Outliner. Perhaps putting all of them together in a blender, with Daylite and DevonThink… :)
With Thinking Rock one of my problems is that I need to spend too much time typing vs. working. Sometimes it’s worth it, but I wish I could automate a lot of the typing or make it more user friendly. More Mac-like.
    Thanks again. :)

  15. Nixfu Says:

How does checkbook compare to moneydance?

  16. lilaliend Says:

Very Nice :) Glad I spent the $6 very late last night at the last minute.

  17. Derik Says:

shadowClipboard is great. Much better than the current private beta of iClip, which although will say it’s a Universal Binary if you get info on it, actually runs in Rosetta if take a look at Activity Monitor.

  18. harringg Says:

I got the Checkbook from the anagram yesterday (which I agree, if it’s only supposed to be given to people who paid for another ZOT, don’t put it on the list for “free”.) and still went for the $6. I use Quicken already because it syncs with my Palm TX. I’ll give Checkbook to my kids who are at the age where they are doing small jobs and hopefully will learn money management with Checkbook. Haven’t used clipboard tools so I guess that may be worth $6 if it’s useful.

  19. Peter Says:

erichd – if the hint was understood, you’d like Zot to offer a piece of software that isn’t even out of beta and is not ready for prime time at all? I think that’s a DudZot to me. Maybe BuggyZot.

  20. Karsen Says:

Bummer on my first ZOT purchase. I already own Checkbook and I’m set in my ways using iClip.

  21. swerdna Says:

Oh well, I’ve learned my lesson. Just bought two applications that are not useful to me: Quicksilver already gives me clipboard history alongside everything else it does (plus I have iClip) and, if I was going to buy a personal accounting app, it would be iBank or Cha-Ching, or anything other than Chequebook. I really hate Chequebook’s icons – enough to not use it, plus the feature set seems lacking and the app seems a bit dull and uinspired (as if personal accounts wasn’t dull enough already.)

I know it was only $6 and that’s great value for some, but for me it was money thrown away that would actually pay for something useful, like a nice sandwich or beer! ;)

Please let’s have some choices within the MysteryZOTs like we did with the Tasty TwentyFive.

I’ll probably not do another ZOT where I have no way of ascertaining the value to me. I suspect the reason that they keep being put on despite numerous complaints about overlap or rehashing of apps is they generate a lot of sales for macZOT.

  22. pagnz Says:

These are really valuable apps for the money. This is a good deal. I wouldn’t have tried them otherwise.

Checkbook looks like a much better cashbook manager than any of the other programmes I’ve tried. It’s limited in scope, but the problem with the others is they are too complex. This one looks very mac like.

I’ve got iclip and I’m happy with it, but it is a resource hog (plus they have been breaking their promise on version 4 for too long). But shadowclip looks worth a trial.

I can see not everyone will need these apps but this deal was excellent.

  23. Jefe Says:

Peter .. we’ve already had DudZot.. except they called it Stickler!

Whatever you call it, AppZapper thought it was delicious.

Anyway.. I’d been thinking about trying Checkbook since Quicken is bloated and no universal binary is to be seen.

And like Derik said, iClip running in rosetta is just a resource hog. The more things I can get out of Rosetta the happier i will be.. Damn you Adobe.

  24. lonniehb Says:

Well I didn’t buy this mystery and I wish I would have.

That’s a bummer for me, the developers and ZOT. Money could’ve changed hands. I’m personally out for all mysteries, it was a GREAT idea ZOT, but the newness has worn off – I want to know what I’m buying.

  25. Marc D. Says:

Although I have no use for either of these apps, I offset the money I spent by not going to Jack in the Box for lunch.

It’s kinda like getting a fruitcake on Christmas Winter Holiday, I’ll just pass it along to a friend.

  26. Marc D. Says:

Although I have no use for either of these apps, I offset the money I spent by not going to Jack in the Box for lunch.

  27. Joe Says:

I always wanted Checkbook, but was too much of a cheapskate to buy it. Hopefully, I will start using it. This is money well spent.

  28. bschooley Says:

If anyone wants the shadowClipboard license, let me know. I’d be willing to trade for something else.

  29. Bill Says:

My wife was just complaining about MS Word not having a multi-entry clipboard feature like Office 2003 for Windows, so that one will go to her and she’s sure to use it until she breaks it!

I’ve been needing an application like Checkbook for our finances, so an all-around great ZOT! Thanks!

  30. Groxx Says:

While they seem a good deal for $6, I’m glad I didn’t buy them. I don’t have a use for either, and I’ve tried multiple clipboard apps (I end up just remembering what I copied anyway, and finding it again).

  31. TJ Says:

I’m not disappointed nor am I thrilled with my surprise ZOT. I already own Checkbook, which is a very nice application so that alone for anyone needing a finance manager should be please. I’ll have to give this ShadowClipboard a whirl… I’ve been using the old iSnip which I liked so hopeful I can replace it with this.

Also did anyone win or get those 5 licenses for writing something gimmicky about the Zot?

  32. TJ Says:

Opps, forgot to ask where my licenses are? Do we get an email with them or something? I haven’t gotten mine yet.

  33. TommyW Says:

$6 and I’m happy with it for Checkbook. The multiple clipboard I have sorted with iClip.

I’ll add ShadowClipboard to only a few others I have no use for.
    - Stickler
    - Photprinto

I’d happily swap all three licenses for Disclabel or MacPilot…

  34. erichd Says:

    Eddie, and tohers…

THe “hint hint” was for Midngiht Inbox, as mentoined by Peter, they haven’t released version 1 yet, instead they’ve released v0.95, and yeah, it’s buggy, but so was KIT when I got it from here, so assuming the discount thorugh MZ, the deal would be good!

and I’m still waiting for the BETA of Disco that I paid for.

Actually, I think what I need is Minerva over on MDA. I’m that disorganized and lazy. Or maybe I mean overwhelmed and flooded with information.

  35. yahtzeen Says:

No more mystery zots for me. Checkbook looks like another in a long line of bad mac money management apps (Cha-Ching on the other hand is awesome) and like others I already use iClip which I got here.

I’ll stick to buying when I know what it is or if the mystery is spelled out better ahead of time.

  36. Frank Says:

Glad I walked away from thiis Zot. I don’t need yet another place to store clip board contents.

  37. Cameron Says:

Sigh, I just don’t need this. Too bad.

  38. erichd Says:

    Yahtzeen,

Cha-Ching does indeed look awesome (like that other Midnight app I mentioned earlier)

Is it the “upcoming app” from dev for Cast Life? I really, really, hope so!

Though I’m still unclear on what it is I got for the DevZot, asidee form a second license for Cast Life. Otherwise, huh, what do I do? email Juan….

Hell, maybe Midnight will pick up Minerva if MDA doesn’t. Someone needs to get in front of the Apple bus so they can be bought out.

  39. wes Says:

    erichd,
ive wanted something like minerva for awhile now. it doesnt look like it is going to make it though. i was reading a bit on it today. im about to pick up an xcode book and get to work on it. tired of waiting for others to make the apps i need……

that would be soo hot. minerva…….

  40. RayCon Says:

Before I tossed in my $6, I thought that if this turned out like I feared it would, I’d be done with MysteryZOTs. So, no more mysteries for me. I’d rather pay full price, because with all I waste on apps I don’t need, I could buy the ones I’d really like to own. iClip is the best multi-clipboard I’ve found, by a long shot, and I already own Quicken 2006. When a piece of software is demoed in advance of my payment, I’ll try it out and buy it if I like. Otherwise, you can count me out.

  41. Eddie Says:

    Thanks erichd.
Hopefully Inbox will be featured in Maczot. As it is now, I did find it buggy, expensive, and a bit confusing. I loved the interface, and it’s not bad for a pre-release title, but I would not trust it yet for my GTD needs. I’ll definitely keep my eye on it.

  42. Luca Says:

    To: bschooley

The same for me, bschooley: I’ve bought it on Monday, still nothing from maczot…
They say that they usually deliver the license within the 48 hours following the purchase, “However, in special events like a multi-day MysteryZOT, for example, you’ll only receive a registration when the Mystery is revealed”.

Ok, it seems the time has come, but… nothing yet!
    Any news from you?

  43. Luca Says:

Edit: it was for “TJ”, not bschooley

    Sorry, guys.
If anybody can tell us when and where we’ll receive our licenses….

    Thank you all

  44. ZOT Says:

All serials have been upoaded to your account as well as having been sent via email.

    ZOT!

  45. csmiles Says:

    Hello All,

Just wanted to announce that Dan is the winner of the funniest quote for the ShoeZot.

    “Hmm… ShoeZot? I’ll give it a try, but I hope the apps don’t sock….”

To claim your prize Dan, send an email to brian@maczot.com

Congrats! There were so many clever and funny postings….we laughed and chuckled for hours.

  46. Luca Says:

to ZOT: thank you, got them all!
Nice apps, needed them, it’s worth 6 bucks for sure.

  47. Dan Says:

I won? Wow! Having read all the other entries, I can say it must have been a close decision — there was some funny stuff there!

I’m not going to be able to use 5 installs, especially since I already bought a ShoeZOT myself! So I’m going to give them away to either:

    The 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th and 20th people to visit my website http://www.dandollars.com and make a donation

    OR

The first 5 people to make a donation on http://www.dandollars.com of at least $10.00.

The first $10+ donation that isn’t 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th or 20th will eliminate the prize for the 20th donor. The second $10+ donation that isn’t 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th or 20th will eliminate the prize for the 15th donor, and so on…

You can just click on my name to link to DanDollars. Also, please let people know about this website by clicking on the “tell a friend” link.

Please note that there are gifts for donors and there is a big gift – a MAJOR gift – that will be announced when donations reach a certain level, and every dollar given will be a chance to win that major gift… You’ll have to follow the website to find out more!

  48. Drew Says:

Man, what a waste! It would be cool to be able to swap these for something else. iClip is talked up on here so I buy it. Not shadowClip is said to be better by ZOT. Yeah, I think the MysteryZot’s have got to stop for me … they sure seem to becoming a waste of money. I could have spent $5 of the $6 on the current shadowBurn ZOT and got something that would be partially useful!

  49. Mike Says:

A complete waste of $6. I’m not going to stop using Quicken.
