Have you ever needed to see somebody else’s desktop so you could help troubleshoot? (Mom, Dad, Grandparents?) Ever needed quick access to a computer in your office while on the road? Get Access, Anywhere Just because you’re away from your Mac doesn’t mean you have to be away from its contents. Use Desktop Transporter and connect remotely to any Mac set to share. Control remote Macs (like your Macbook Pro at work, or wife’s iMac downstairs) from your desktop. Use Desktop Transporter’s multiple desktop view to switch between all displays attached to connected Macs, and then use copy/paste to transfer text and graphics between the local and the remote machines. |

Just tested this out with Austin from AppZapper and it worked very well.
I know several family members who see me as the Mac help person and this is the solution I didn’t want to buy Apple Remote Desktop for.
Enjoy this one.

This works really nicely, I’ll definitely be using it when the need arises.
December 5th, 2006 at 12:29 am
I’ll give it a try. Currently using chicken vnc though.
December 5th, 2006 at 1:16 am
It would be great if this app also supported vnc-ing windows machines.
December 5th, 2006 at 1:19 am
Cool! I’ve been keeping an eye on this one.

This application might require Port Mapping. If you’re not familiar with that, don’t worry. There’s a nice little application (that we’ll try to get on ZOT for you) called LightHouse
I installed the trial version of this and had Desktop Transporter working immediately.
It’s worth checking out because other apps, like SubEthaEdit also require port forwarding.
If you don’t know what that is, it’s a simple directive for the router. It says, if any information comes to the router through this port, please forward it to my computer. (assuming you set it up that way)

For those of you who are using VNC at the moment: The main advantages over VNC are a nicer straightforward UI, a robust transport protocol, a menu extra, and support for non-US keyboards.

Sorry to hijack the thread Eric, but any news regarding the GiftZot registration for PhotoStickies?
As a DevonAgent and DevonThink Pro user I was pleasantly surprised to see that this application was included, but I have not received any registration information yet.
Thanks :D

Hmm. VNC is dead simple to set up on the client Macs, and Chicken of the VNC is dead simple to use as a controller.

Darn! I bought zis last week for full price. Iz a great app, and I zee the zots are getting better.
December 5th, 2006 at 4:19 am
It _may_ or it _does_ require port 7001 to be forwarded?
I just read the manual (haven’t had to do that in a while) and they specifically say they won’t say.
Has anyone used this w/ a remote computer? do I need to map a port?
December 5th, 2006 at 4:22 am
i personally support the use of Lighthouse. i’ve got to check if it works w/o restarting the router though. currently using airport extreme (not the very best router around if you ask me. kinda overpriced and features are not good enough)

Sweet! I won the app today, and once I pay off christmas bills I’ll be getting my wife a Macbook or iMac so I’ll have a secondary Mac to access (instead of having to use those old PC support skills to keep her ancient PC running) :D Thanks MacZOT!

So…does this use the VNC protocol?
December 5th, 2006 at 7:02 am
So…DOES this use the VNC or tightVNC or similar protocol? or maybe VNC over SSH?

I am so glad I cashed in my refund ticket for the GiftZot – this is a better use of $20 (for me, of course – YMMV). I came SO close to buying this full price a while back!
Now I can sort out the wife’s iBook without leaving my iMac!
Thanks ZOT! (But don’t forget the “MarkZot” suggestion, will you?)

Interesting – I just looked at this app last weekend as a better alternative to VNC and ChickenOfTheVNC (client). The advantage that DesktopTransporter offers is that you can choose a display if you have a multi-monitor configuration. I couldn’t figure out a way to send anything other than the primary monitor with the various freeware and opensource alternatives.

Does the client computer need to have a copy of Desktop Transporter installed as well for it to work?
December 5th, 2006 at 11:22 am
If there was a Windows solution to work with this, I might jump.
December 5th, 2006 at 11:25 am
The advantages I see are that I can work in a scaled-down display and in grayscale, thereby saving bandwidth and being able to control my iMac 20″ from my small iBook. Also, I use spanish keyboard layout, and VNC was driving me mad
I don’t know if the manual mentions it, but in addition to port mapping, you should also configure OSX’s firewall to allow connections on port 7001

Can I control an unlimited number of remote machines, or do I need multiple licenses? I would be using the same single machine as the controller.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:12 pm
Does this work over the internet like VNC?
I thought I had emailed them a couplle of weeks ago and they said that its only for LANs – perhaps I’m hallucinating. COVNC hasn’t been giving me true colours and has been slow for months so I’ve been looking ofr an alternative

A second question: Do both people need to have DT installed? So it costs twice as much, that is, one for each computer?? I can’t find this info in the read me.
December 5th, 2006 at 2:41 pm
About the second question: “One license allows you to use it on up to two Macs.”
I found that on the website – http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/desktoptransporter/index.html
December 5th, 2006 at 3:14 pm
According to the Desktop Transporter home page:
– And finally, it’s cheaper that the other advanced solutions. One license allows you to use it on up to two Macs.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned SpyMe for Mac
It can be had at http://www.readpixel.com/spyme
Only 15$, allows you to send files back and forth between client/server and also includes 3 licenses so you can give it to your family for those people you need to help out, or 3 macs you need to access.
And no, I don’t work for them, I just did some research today, and SpyMe has received almost perfect ratings on VersionTracker and MU.
Just giving alternatives!
