Great MacZot. Correction – best MacZot. Screw everything you’re heard about Yojimbo, StickyBrain/SOHONotes, Hogs Breath.. this is the real thing. One of a couple programs that will keep me from ever easily going back to Windows. Get it at a discount price!

I’ve been using this for over a year. Its a great app a must have for anyone with lots of information and no way to keep it manageable. I keep many thousands of PDF’s cataloged and searchable by context with this amazing app.
Really great Zot, if you don’t own this, you should get it at this great price. I use the Professional Office version and it has made my life so much easier. Now everything in my world is paper free.

I have the personal version from various bundles. Will I regret not buying this version?

@ Sanjay –
Not if you need more than one database and you want to automatize your gestures with scripts (collecting and organizing data goes much faster).
I already have it and is one of my most used / loved app.

The pro version has some very nice added features, as does the pro office version. Check out the differences on their web site. The greates feature for me is the ability to copy or save any web page to the database by bringing up the print menu and using the PDF button to save the page as a PDF to DEVONthink. I use it to store all my bank transactions and online receipts without ever haveing to print anything out. I use the pro office version, and I know that this feature is at least available on the pro version. About the personal version, I am unsure.
The MacZOT price for this rocks, and if you don’t own it, it’s a great investment. Oh, and the developers are very responsive to inquiries.

This is a great application for anybody wanting to stay organized with his documents and other stuff. And the MacZOT-price almost makes it a must-buy.
Of note:
Here is the comparison table concerning the different DT-versions:
http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/devonthink/comparison.html
Also, if you already own the Personal-version, there is always the possibility to upgrade to Pro at 40 $. However, if you want to upgrade now, why not give MacZOT their share.
It’s always nice to see such well-respected apps here at MacZOT!, good work!

Great app, great price. If it has any weaknesses … I would say that its interface is a bit quirky, and not as “intuitive” or glossy as you might like. Kinda like GraphicConverter as compared to iPhoto. But like GC, is astonishing in its ability to do what it does, and do it like nobody else. If you deal with lots of information, and want your Mac to do the heavy lifting, sorting, and even some of the categorizing for you, get this!

This is a great app, but it has a few weaknesses. I have the Personal version, and it messes up certain file types on occasion. For example, importing Scrivener files will leave them empty (found this out the hard way after importing half a dozen such files). I’m sure there are others. It’s still a great app, but it’s good to be aware of these little issues. The smart features almost make up for those issues though, and it’s only because I use a lot of those types of files that it’s a problem for me. If you stick mostly to the supported file types you should be all set.
I actually just picked up EagleFiler and am slowly moving over to that. It has fewr “smart” features, but it allows tagging, doesn’t mess with files (it stores them in a normal folder with a database file, kind of like iTunes does, no need for an export to move it and you can access your files without starting the program, good for accessing your info on other computers), has a cleaner interface (in my opinion), and it costs $40 for the full (only) version. It’s worth checking out.

DevonThink Pro at this price is an excellent deal. If you are looking for an excellent information manager/research tool/document manager, this is a great program for it. I believe the Pro Office version integrates very well with the Fujitsu SnapScan which makes it even better for going entirely paperless with your life. Even if you don’t do that, the Pro version has almost any feature you could need. The price is right and if you’ve been considering DT, this would be the time to buy it. One note, when you first start the program, be sure to check out all of the preferences and adjust them. The defaults are alright, but it is worth taking a look at everything to make sure you aren’t making extra copies of documents on import, etc. Also, they have some good tutorial videos on their site. Those are worth a look as well. Great MacZot today.

Is v.2 coming out anytime soon? I wonder what the upgrade price will be.
October 26th, 2007 at 7:44 am
Already own it – Now if it had been Office Pro then that would have been a great deal. Agree about the interface, Talked to a few users and they all say the interface lets the application down badly. Would like to see more text editing options, customs folders and just a whole bunch of updates each with great ideas to make workflows more dynamic and i-App-like. Unfortunately the developers while having a good thing don’t seem to be able to take it to the next level and make it truly great.
Maybe they are listening, but probably knowing how they work.. they’re not. Which is a shame.

Still waiting for version 2.0, waiting over a year. for the promosed Safari serchable version.

Opps, meant Spotlight searchable version. While I am waiting I will continune to ues Devon Note.

Grab this, people, if you have any need at all for a database, project management system or just a more intelligent and flexible way of storing your files. It’s superb, by far the best out there. In particular it has a staggeringly good AI system for indexing and automatically filing material, after it has learned from your filing habits. Sure, it has it’s slightly rough edges. The interface could be improved, you can only have one database open at a time, v 2 is taking a very long time coming, etc. But at this price don’t think twice. The developers are also very responsive and there’s an excellent, well moderated user’s forum that really feels like a community.
And while you’re there, and if you do any heavy duty web searching and research, take a look at DEVONagent. This is a brilliant and far too little known means of using many different search engines simultaneously and sifting the hits with the same AI precision. It saves hours and hours of work, even if you’re the niftiest Googler on the planet. How about a MacZot option for this, guys?
They have some very cool freeware too. Check out WordService.
Should say I have nothing to do with the company, but am a very enthusiastic everyday user who feels their products should be much better known…

I use DEVONthink Pro nearly every day to store documents for school. If you already own DEVONagent it offers seamless integration. You can move all your searches into DEVONthink.
I had DEVONthink Personal from last years MacHeist and upgraded at the beginning of this semester for the added flexibility that the Pro version offers (the widgets and Automator scripts are pretty cool also). Most people probably don’t need the Pro version, but this is the same price as the Personal version. So, why not? You may decide that you like the extra features if you’ve been on the fence in the past. I agree, this is definitely one of the best ZOTs ever!

Drat — I just bought this two weeks ago! And it is everything everyone is saying and more… love the way it finds cross-references you wouldn’t spot otherwise among docs. There’s a bit of a learning curve, especially if you’re not used to scripting. But it’s a great program…so good I couldn’t wait for a maczot offer like this great one to buy it. You should get it now; when you invest in something like this, you’ll find a use for it and you probably won’t regret it, especially if archiving a lot of paperwork or research.

The program is fantastic. The company is very responsive. This is a really good deal.
Yojimbo and the like are easier to use, but DevonThink has so many features. It can index all sorts of media formats, and even unknown file formats. It grows as you do, so if you have a question as to whether this version is powerful enough for you, you can always upgrade.
As a organizational tool it is invaluable. Add DevonAgent and you have a great research tool. Upgrade to Pro Office and you can encode, store, and index scanned documents.
It has a great basic text editor- very simple.
It works as a wiki for you info.
Helps force organization into one’s life.
Index’s information and find unusual similarities and connections.
The learning curve is a bit difficult and I havn’t found the AI infalable and at some times not all that usable. On the other hand, the documentation is good and the movies are a good jumping off point.
I started off with this version and have upgraded little-by-little to Pro Office.

Every so often I play with DEVON. Looks cool but form my needs I think YoJimbo or mori are just as good. What exactly does this do that is so much better then what I can got with a tool like mori?
October 26th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
I’m waiting for a discount on DevonThink Office Pro…which has integration with Apple Mail.
October 26th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
By the way, my solution involves using DevonThink with EagleFiler. Since DevonThink can index directories without importing them (something EagleFiler can not do), if you index your EagleFiler library you can use all of DevonThink’s smart features with EagleFiler’s simpler interface, tags (which can be added as Spotlight comments in the file’s meta data), and better handling of diverse file types. It’s a win-win.
October 26th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Steven: I use both Yojimbo and DEVONthink. Both are extremely useful but I use them for different things (Yojimbo for personal things and DEVONthink for school/research). Just download and see if it works better for you. Two big things are that DEVONthink has a built in web browser and it handles a lot more file types.
October 26th, 2007 at 10:30 pm
For the person waiting for a ZOT on pro office, they offer upgrades at the site–you can purchase this and then purchase an upgrade. Maybe not as good a deal if you got a ZOT on pro office but still the 40 dollars off.
A LOT of companies do this, offer software upgrades for the difference if you got a lower version because you didn’t know about a different one or didn’t think you needed it or whatever. So if there’s a ZOT on almost the right thing, check it out. It still may work for you.
October 27th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Was holding off on this and finally decided to go with it, even though I already have Circus Ponies Notebook. I do use DevonAgent (which I picked up earlier this year in a Zot package).
Still waiting on the serial # from the Developers though…
