Intego VirusBarrier X5You know very well that your Mac contains important information and files. If you use it for your work, you are aware how much time and money it would cost if you were to lose these files. Even if you just use your computer at home, you certainly have files you would hate to lose. On top of that, if a virus were to erase all of your files, even if you did not lose anything important, you would have to spend a great deal of time reinstalling your system and all of your programs. The virus threat is real. More and more viruses are being discovered every day. While the Macintosh is relatively privileged, compared to Windows, there is still the danger of existing viruses or new viruses spreading to your Mac and damaging your files. Intego VirusBarrier X5 is the simple, fast and non-intrusive antivirus solution for Macintosh computers. It offers thorough protection against viruses and malware of all types, coming from infected files or applications, whether on CD-ROMs, DVDs or other removable media, or in files downloaded over the Internet or other types of networks. VirusBarrier X5 protects your Mac from viruses by constantly examining all the files that your computer reads and writes, as well as watching for suspicious activity that may be the sign of viruses acting on applications or other files. With VirusBarrier X5 on your computer, you can rest assured that your Macintosh has the best protection available against viruses of all kinds. VirusBarrier X5 works in the background and checks everything that your Mac does, looking for viruses. It knows the unique signatures of all known Macintosh viruses, and whenever a new virus is discovered, Intego’s Virus Monitoring Center goes into action to provide updated virus definitions, which you can download using Intego NetUpdate. When you purchase VirusBarrier X5, you have access to virus definition updates for one year from the date of installation. After this time, additional subscriptions, allowing you to extend your access to virus definition updates, are available from Intego, and can be purchased by using NetUpdate. VirusBarrier X5 was designed according to specific concepts. The main idea is that an antivirus program should not require the user to do anything once it is installed and configured, unless a virus is detected. The VirusBarrier X5 philosophy can be summed up in three words: simple, fast and non-intrusive. Simple VirusBarrier X5 is the easiest to use antivirus program for Macintosh. After you install it, it works in the background, keeping a close eye on your Mac, and verifies your files silently. Fast VirusBarrier X5 is fast and efficient. It does not slow down your Mac, and you can work normally while it’s active. Each time a file is created, opened or saved, VirusBarrier X5 checks the file to make sure it is safe. Non-intrusive VirusBarrier X5 is non-intrusive. It will not constantly ask you about a “suspicious” activity, each time you want to install a program, nor will it generate endless false alarms. Once you have installed it, you probably won’t notice it’s there, unless it detects a virus and alerts you. In addition, you do not need to deactivate VirusBarrier X5 when installing new software, regardless of what the program’s installer or manual may say. VirusBarrier X5 can run all the time, in the background, protecting your Mac without you needing to worry about it. |

Uh oh, here start the “But a Mac is impervious to Virii” comments.
It is true that AV companies are going to have a hard time convincing Mac users to buy their wares in the near-term because of the lack of virii on the Mac platform … it is also true that as Macs get more market-share, there will be increasing numbers of haxorz that want to make a working virus for the Mac OS. And maybe it is reasonable to ‘get in early’ with an inexpensive program.
Not for me, but for the paranoid … here’s a good deal.

I tried VirusBarier in the past. It didn’t find any virus because I didn’t had any (suprise). Just made my Mac sluggish.
If yo want virus protection try ClamXav = free!

Intego’s support is terrible. Their products are, in general, the same. The “control panels” aren’t user friendly and I’d go so far as to say that their apps are bloated and as Arjan said, they slow things down. In all honesty, if I had won this app as my freebie today, I would have given my license to someone I didn’t like. If there’s any way on Maczot.com to see if I’ve ever given a bad comment to any app, please do a search and you’ll see I haven’t. I just feel so strong about how bad there products are, I had to leave a comment.

When I came back to a Mac from the PC world, I bought this app (version X4) full price.
It did make my Mac sluggish.
More troublingly, when I moved my PC files over to run on Parallels, it flagged a number of them as having a virus. The latest versions of Norton, McAfee and ZoneAlarms did not find any problems. VirusBarrier flagged an .exe file downloaded from a Developer’s site which I questioned with the Developer who denied there was any problems with the file. Things got worse; the files VirusBarrier flagged, whether I told it to ignore or remove the virus, it deleted the file in all but name, leaving me with a zero kilobyte file. I did not realize what was happening until I had destroyed several files, one of which was irreplaceable.
I removed VirusBarrier from my system and avoid Intego products.

@Rees,
The correct term is viruses. Virii is an invented word. :)

Don’t talk bad about the product, the thread will get deleted. :(
That said, I had to help our Windows IT department get McAfee installed on a lone Mac that needed to be on the network and McAfee support wouldn’t answer my question as to what viruses I should be worried about.
I was asking sincerely because if it’s really an issue, I do want to be protected. If it’s fear of passing viruses to Windows users via email, while you are sending that virus to your Windows friend, tell them to get a Mac and enjoy it!
I always hear that “More and more viruses are being discovered every day.” Could we get spefics?
Window has MyDoom, Sasser, ect.
If the developer can tell me what specific virus I can get that can affect my 10.4.11 Macintosh, I’ll consider buying if I really should have it. I’m not being sarcastic, I will buy based on fact, not on theory. If there are viruses I should be protected from that will affect my computer, I want to be.

“It knows the signatures of all known Macintosh viruses.”
That’s not hard, there’s 3, and Apple’s security updates killed them months ago.
Mac users don’t need antivirus software because the production of viruses for the Mac is so slow. When a virus is created, Apple releases a software update quickly to fix the loophole the virus found.
I hate to kill this zot, but there is no real need for antivirus software on the Macintosh platform yet.

For anyone seriously considering buying this overpriced and totally unnecessary piece of software, first read this MacFixIt article, “Mac OS Anti-Virus software: more trouble than it’s worth†(http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060511065134478). Sure, it’s dated 2006, but nothing has changed since then. Conclusion: anti-virus apps for the Mac have a long history of causing more problems than they solve. This includes Intego’s offering, though this is considered less harmful than some others. ClamXav comes off best, but even this has its issues. Bottom line: if you have a Mac, you don’t need anything like this, and furthermore it may well give you hassles. This is not complacency, just fact. Yet, at any rate…

No thanks. don’t like intego’s overpriced products and terrible service. Even after the discount this app is still overpriced.

I purchased a suite of programs from Intego (NetBarrier, ContentBarrier, VirusBarrier and PersonalBackup) in an inexpensive package deal and have been very happy with all of them. The user interface is great, I find the apps work as advertised and my personal experience with support has also been good. Each to their own, you get what you pay for, don’t knock it till you try it, live and let live, be prepared, etc.

As one other poster said, If you feel you ned anti-virus software get ClamX, it’s free.

@Ndebt
What Macintosh viruses has VirusBarrier found and removed for you? I’d really like to know. If the answer is none, that’s useful because it means my hunch is right that I’ll be fine without (for now). If you have, I’d like to know what it was and what it could do to your system if not removed.
It doesn’t look like the developer hasn’t been around today to address the issues, which also tells me about the company.

This thread is probably dead by now, but if anyone is still interested in following up, there’s an excellent piece in today’s TidBits, “Should Mac Users run Antivirus Software?†by Rich Mogull. It’s just about the last word on the matter, and the conclusion is no, unless your surfing habits are really risky, you need to avoid passing on Windows viruses to Windows users, or your company’s policy demands it. Read it at http://db.tidbits.com/issue/920.
