User comments
- I always used Ripit – which overall I can’t complain of – to backup my son’s dvd collection but lately it failed (corrupted file) with some Winnie the Pooh dvd. I downloaded Mac DVDRipper Pro and it flawlessy worked. taipan2008
- Wow! Mac DVDRipper Pro was able to successfully rip a DVD with a really bad scratch that neither RipIt, MTR 3.0 nor Handbrake could rip. The $10 price tag is a bargain compared to RipIt and MTR 3.0, especially given that Mac DVDRipper Pro was to rip a DVD that the others couldn’t. I’m a very happy guy! Drdul
- Successfully ripped a damaged DVD that MacTheRipper wouldn’t do. It’s worth the modest price tag. brayne
- OK. So this SW ripped my Click DVD in 43 minutes where FairMount, MacTheRipper3, Handbrake and VideoMonkey failed… I clear “BUY” from me!!!! Toerk_2
- I was able to rip a scratched DVD with this tool, which MTR and Ripit refused to rip. It also ripped 2 new DVDs (bought yesterday) which were not rippable with MTR or Ripit.
So far I like this program a lot ! Beamy

I bought this recently from MacUpdate (sorry, MacZot, if I’d have known …) and I think it works very well. Fairmount is free, yes, and works well also, but I occasionally have sound issues with the Fairmount rips. I also own Mac The Ripper, not the one you can download freely, but the one I had to get from Geezerbutt, and I still have issues with the results from that, too. So, for $5.95, I figured there was no reason not to add this to my assortment. It seems to work fairly quickly, and there aren’t so many options that it becomes confusing.
In the preferences, you have a couple of options to check when you get those bad sectors messages. It may or may not work, depending on the DVD. Also, you can rip to a .dvdmedia, which keeps everything nice and tidy, or to a VIDEO_TS folder, then use something else to burn it to a DVD.
I am of the opinion that you can’t have enough DVD rippers. I’ve lost too many DVDs to little children’s sweaty, sticky fingers and careless treatment. Between the three ripping apps I have now, I have pretty much duplicated everything in my extensive DVD library. I keep the dupes in a sleeve right inside the DVD box, and god help anyone watching the original if there is a dupe in the box!

I a attempted to rip a standard movie (Braveheart) and it spat out BRAVHART.dvdmedia which I could open with the dvd player application. However, I cannot import this file into iTunes or play it on Apple TV. Does this application support use in iTunes? Because to me it’s useless if it doesn’t. The DVDs I rip with Handbrake open in iTunes just fine. . .

Aimersoft DVD Ripper is the most powerful one that I have used before. It has great power to rip DVD to video of all formats. You can free download here:

@Jensen
Mac DVDRipper Pro is a ripper not a converter. This means that all it can do is extract and copy the DVD to your hard drive.
TS folder or .dvdmedia files are not supported by iTunes (or QuickTime), only DVD Player will recognize and play these kind of files.
As you already know, Handbrake is a really good converter for iTunes and iPods.

@Jensen
If you go into Preferences and UNcheck ‘Use .dvdmedia’ extension, MDRP will produce a VIDEO_TS folder which you can convert for use in iTunes using, yes, Handbrake or others like Popcorn, VisualHub (which is no longer supported, but still works great), DVD Remaster Pro.

Tried “Walk the Line” but got an error message!
Fairmount chewed it for breakfast.

@Olligarski Could you provide me the UPC code of the DVD (the number under the code bar) ?
@Jensen As others have said, MDRP only decrypts, you will need another software to convert to an iTunes suitable format.
MDRP has come a long way from the initial launch (just last April!).

I would recommend paying $35 and getting iFunia DVD Ripper Pro http://www.ifunia.com/ I have found that this is the most reliable ripper out there in my humble experience. You can also get free Mac the Ripper, I have had issues with certain DVDs not being able to rip.
