I only just started the course – am on chapter 3. At different points in the last 10 years or so I have tried understanding object oriented programing (I had some exposure to sequential programing earlier in life). Headings are much more than you think

Headings are easy, right? You just click the right style (in Mellel, the right auto-title) and there you have it.

But with Mellel you can achieve so much more: you can set your title to look differently than its numbering, set which headings will be numbered and if they’ll reset the numbering, set headings to always appear at the top of the page, add a running header that changes dynamically, insert tabs and line breaks in a heading (but not in the ToC), set the content of the outline (to include just the title, for example), force appending body text to headings, and so on.

With most of those, Mellel is the only word processor that allows you to do this automatically and reliably. You control how your document headings look, how the outline will look, how your Table of Contents will look, and so on. Once you’ve tried this with Mellel, it would be tough imagining how you could do without those up until now.

Cite with ease and power

Mellel offers you an easy way to handle citations and bibliographies, keeping them always in check, and preventing this delicate task from becoming tangled and annoying.

The Bibliography palette in Mellel allows you to view all the citations in the document, navigate to them, switch to a bibliography manager, scan, unscan, rescan, etc. Scanned and Unscanned citations in the text are highlighted, and you can open them and easily set special options (e.g., page numbers, omitting author or year).

The Theory of Constraints (TOC)

The Theory of Constraints is an overall management philosophy founded on the idea that all real-world systems; whether personal, interpersonal, or organizational; have at least one constraint: something that holds the system back from accomplishing more of its primary purpose, or goal. The rate of this accomplishment is called throughput. If a system had absolutely no constraints, it would be capable of infinite throughput. But though infinite throughput is impossible, amazing throughput gains are possible through the careful identification and management of the system’s key constraints. The purpose of the TOC, originally developed by Eliyahu M. (“Eli”) Goldratt and first popularized in his bestselling business novel The Goal, is to give individuals and organizations the tools they need to manage their constraints in the most effective manner possible. Originally applied to manufacturing lines, TOC principles have been successfully adapted for areas as diverse as supply chain, accounting and finance, project management, health care, military planning, and software engineering.

TOC claims that a real-world system with more than three constraints is extremely unlikely, and in fact usually only one constraint is key. Perhaps counter-intuitively, this is because the more complex a system becomes, the more interrelationships are necessary among its parts, which results in fewer overall degrees of freedom.

A major implication of this is that managing a complex system or organization can be made both simpler and more effective by providing managers with few, specific, yet highly influential areas on which to focus — maximizing performance in the areas of key constraints, or elevating the constraint (making it less constraining.)

The Five Focusing Steps

To accomplish this, the developers of TOC developed the Five Focusing Steps, which define a process of ongoing improvement. (Step Zero was later added for additional clarity.)

0. Articulate the goal of the system. How do we measure the system’s success?
1. Identify the constraint. What is the resource limiting the system from attaining more of its goal?
2. Exploit the constraint to its fullest. How can we keep the constraining resource as busy as possible, exclusively on what it does best?
3. Subordinate all other processes to the decisions made in Step 2. How can we align all processes so they give the constraining resource everything it needs?
4. Elevate the constraint. If managing the constraining resource more efficiently does not give us all the improvement we need, then how can we acquire more of the resource?
5. Avoid inertia. Has the constraint moved to some other resource as a result of the previous steps? If so, don’t allow inertia itself to become the constraint: go back to step 1.

The Thinking Processes (TP)

The Thinking Processes emerged as TOC practitioners worked with organizations that needed to identify their core constraints and how to manage or elevate them. They needed the answers to three deceptively simple questions:

• What to change?
• To what to change?
• How to cause the change?

The Thinking Processes are based on the scientific method, to which is added a simple visual language for describing and reasoning about situations, arguments, and plans using the language of cause and effect. There are two basic kinds of reasoning: sufficient cause and necessary condition.

From these, the practitioners developed several methodologies called application tools designed to answer the three questions. The application tools provide the ability to develop a complete picture of a system’s core constraints and how to overcome them.

Used to move from an articulation of the undesirable symptoms (or desirable strengths) present in a system to the core cause that has the most influence over them (i.e., the constraining resource or core issue.)

What’s the most unique, useful feature of your product?

All of them! More seriously, there are quite a lot of ear training applications out there, but what makes EarMaster stand out is that it is so easy to use, interactive (voice, instrument and MIDI input) and eye-pleasing, and that our user community is very active. Not to mention that it is one of the very few that run on Mac!

Why did you create this app? or What need were you trying to satisfy?

I created EarMaster back in the days when I was preparing myself for an audition to enter a music conservatory. I asked a friend of mine to play chords on the piano that I could try to identify, as it was one of the admission exams. After the first session, I started wondering: “why waste my friend’s time with such a robotic task, when a computer could handle it 24/7?”. The original idea of EarMaster was born, and evolved into the software that we know today.

What is most interesting to you about developing SW for the Mac platform.

It is not a secret that many musicians use Mac. Even though EarMaster was first released for Windows, our goals are universal: We want all musicians to use it because we think it is the one program that all musician ought to use daily. This is why we released a Mac version.

What features should a prospective buyer look into during a trial of your product?

With the newer Mac and their internal microphone, it is very easy to use the audio recognition feature of EarMaster. Simply toggle the “Microphone” icon on (bottom right of the screen), go through the microphone tuning wizard, and off you go! You can sing and clap back melodies, rhythms, chords, scales etc. to the computer. No additional hardware needed. It’s really fun to use!

What are some interesting experiences you’ve had creating new versions of your software when OS is upgraded?

EarMaster came to Mac OS during the Leopard era, and worked perfectly with Snow Leopard as it was, so I couldn’t really say yet.

What’s your favorite Mac app out there from another developer? Why?

Garage Band is fantastic. It makes music creation so easy and fast. Hats off!

All the features we could wish to see in EarMaster are already on the roadmap of EarMaster 6, which is currently under development and should be out at the end of 2011 at the earliest. It will be an upgrade to remember! Otherwise, touch screen compatibility would be great if Mac OS goes in that direction at some point.

1) People usually “feel” the first results after a couple of weeks of training.

2) Owners of version 5 will be able to upgrade to version 6 at a low price when it is available (approximately by the end of 2011).

3) You can use sample players or other 3rd party sound engines with EarMaster if you want to and aren’t afraid of a bit of tweaking. See the FAQ on the EarMaster website for more details.

Meet the teacher.

My name is Ryan Smith and I have been using RapidWeaver for over 6 years. Shortly after switching from the PC to the Mac in 2005, I began looking for website design software. I had always had an interest in designing websites, but the software options on the PC were not very appealing. I quickly discovered iWeb and began building websites with that application, but soon found it to be limiting in its capabilities. I liked its ease of use but wanted more flexibility.

I soon stumbled upon RapidWeaver, and I haven’t look elsewhere since. It is the website design application that I had always hoped to find, and I believe it is the best solution for a majority of people, whether it be for a personal website or a business.

In 2007 I began private training and consulting with RapidWeaver users, and in May 2008 I began RapidWeaver Classroom. My primary goal has been to equip people with the knowledge and confidence they need to create and maintain their own websites. Intimidation is a common deterrent for people who have never created a website — RapidWeaver Classroom strives to eliminate that intimidation and empower people to do it themselves.

To date I have personally designed, or aided in the design of, over 200 websites — most for small businesses across the U.S., as well as a few overseas. All of these websites were developed with RapidWeaver, each with its own unique designs and features. I still consult with RapidWeaver users, and as more tools continue to be created for the RapidWeaver platform, I constantly have new material to add to RapidWeaver Classroom. I really enjoy teaching people about RapidWeaver, and it is always exciting to see what gets created as a result of RapidWeaver and the training I provide.
